What is a Bunion?

A bunion (aka hallux valgus) is essentially a bump or protrusion that forms along the side of the big toe joint. Over time, the bump will progressively get larger, and the big toe will lean towards the second toe. This can cause pain in shoes or during activities.

Bunions are easily diagnosable as the bump is visible. To determine the severity of your condition and the best course of action, however, one of our doctors will likely request an x-ray.

Left untreated, bunions will continue to grow, as well as cause other issues – such as hammertoes, corns, arthritis of the toe joint, and calluses.

Who is a Candidate for a Bunionectomy?

Bunion surgery is recommended for those with severe bunions who have tried conservative treatment options first and are still experiencing discomfort that interferes with their daily activities.

At Artisan Foot and Ankle Specialists, we are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of painful bunions, and we can help. Our experienced bunion surgeons can perform the latest surgical techniques, such traditional, minimal incision surgery, and Lapiplasty bunionectomies.

If a bunionectomy is the right option for you, we will conduct a clinical examination and evaluate your x-rays to determine the best procedure based upon your deformity type. This attention to detail tailors the type of bunionectomy to the patient’s needs, as one procedure does not help every single patient. We respect that each patient is different and deserves a customize plan for their procedure.

Not all bunions are the same and not every bunion needs surgery. The start of proper treatment for a bunion is a well-balanced treatment plan weighing risks and benefits of treatments and procedures.

Bunion Surgery FAQs

Bunion surgery, also known as a bunionectomy, involves removing or realigning the bone and tissue around the big toe joint (or the 5th toe joint) to correct a bunion, relieve pain, restore the natural foot shape, and improve the patient’s activity level.
Osteotomy, scarfplasty, lapiplasty/lapifuse, joint fusion, and all-natural bunionectomy are among the choices. Balance Health providers are always learning (or developing) the newest, most innovative approaches to complete Bunion Surgery.
During the evaluation period, providers ask a lot of questions about lifestyle, limits to desired activity, pain level, and even insurance and the patient’s financial state to help determine what is right for the patient and their pocketbook
Candidates typically have significant pain or discomfort from a bunion that affects daily activities and has not responded to conservative treatments, like orthotics or medication.
The risks are similar to all surgery risks. They include infection, blood clots, nerve damage, stiffness, issues with wound healing, and recurrence of the bunion.
You should avoid driving until you are fully weight-bearing without pain, which usually takes a few weeks. Consult your doctor for your personalized recovery plan.
Pain can be managed with prescribed medications, over-the-counter pain relievers, ice, rest, physical therapy, and in some cases treatment with a pain laser.
