Monte Schmalhaus, DPM offers advanced patient-focused foot and ankle care at Artisan Foot and Ankle Specialists. Dr. Schmalhaus treats a variety of pathologies including arthritis, bunions, ankle injuries, tendon injuries, gout, neuromas, bone / joint infection, hammer toes, and athletes foot. He is particularly interested in ankle trauma, foot and ankle reconstruction and ankle replacement.
Dr. Monte Schmalhaus was born in San Ramon, CA and grew up in both Colorado and Utah. He graduated with Honors from Utah Valley University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science. He was also a scholarship athlete and captain of the Division I wrestling team.
During undergraduate studies Dr. Schmalhaus worked as a home health aide where he was first introduced to the medical field. The combination of his sports background and desire to help others achieve a healthy lifestyle led him to pursue post-graduate studies in Podiatric Medicine.
Dr. Schmalhaus earned his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine where he was a member of the Pi Delta National Honor Society.
He then completed his residency at an intensive surgical training program, the San Francisco Bay Area Foot & Ankle Residency at Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers. As chief resident, Dr. Schmalhaus was trained in complex foot and ankle reconstructive surgery under highly-qualified leaders in the profession. He also had the opportunity to perform multiple research projects and volunteer his services on a medical mission trip to Santa Cruz Bolivia as a part of Operation Rainbow.
He is excited to be a part of the Artisan Foot and Ankle Specialists team and make Orange County his home. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, hiking, playing golf, and trying new restaurants.
Dr. Schmalhaus’ goal is to make patient specific treatment plans based on research based evidence. He is accepting new patients at Artisan Foot and Ankle Specialists, so book an appointment by phone or online today.
