For many, Spring is a welcome change, bringing new beginnings, colorful blooms, and clear skies, but for others, the season simply means itching, watering eyes, sniffling noses, sneezes, and coughs! There’s no mistaking when spring allergies arrive, but did you know your feet can have allergies, too?
That’s right, your feet are not immune to allergic reactions and what is known as contact dermatitis. Insect bites can sometimes elicit a reaction including redness, burning, itching, swelling and blisters. Outside elements like too much sun, wind, or cold can also affect the skin on your feet. Most often, however, foot allergies stem from exposure to irritants. This can include the material of those cute new spring sandals, or the dye used in your brightly-colored running socks. Perhaps you wanted to try a new laundry detergent with a spring fresh scent – you may like the smell, but the skin on your feet may not like it at all!
Another common irritant for feet is the chlorine in pools – and let’s face it, there are a lot of those around here! Before you dive right in, beware of high chlorine levels that can leave your feet itchy and dry. Adhesive tape used to support an injury can sometimes cause a reaction as well.
So, don’t just assume you’ve come down with a case of, which is actually a fungal infection. You may be suffering from foot allergies instead, and it’s important to determine the source to stop the reaction, heal the symptoms, and prevent them from happening again.
