StimRouter Therapy for Chronic Foot and Ankle Pain

Chronic foot and ankle pain caused by nerve damage, peripheral neuropathy, or post-surgical discomfort can significantly impact your daily activities and mobility. If traditional treatments have not provided relief, StimRouter Therapy may be a solution. This minimally invasive neuromodulation device helps manage chronic pain by directly stimulating the affected nerves. In this article, we’ll explore how StimRouter therapy works, its benefits, and whether it’s the right treatment for you.

What Is StimRouter Therapy?

StimRouter is an FDA-approved peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) system designed for chronic pain management. Unlike traditional pain relief methods, StimRouter therapy targets specific nerves responsible for pain, delivering mild electrical pulses to disrupt pain signals before they reach the brain.

Conditions Treated with StimRouter Therapy

StimRouter therapy is particularly beneficial for patients suffering from:

  • Peripheral neuropathy – Reduces pain caused by nerve damage in the feet.
  • Post-surgical nerve pain – Helps manage discomfort after foot or ankle surgery.
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) – Provides relief from nerve hypersensitivity.
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome – Addresses pain and tingling from nerve compression.
  • Chronic foot and ankle pain – A solution for persistent pain that does not respond to conventional treatments.

How StimRouter Therapy Works

  • Implantation of the StimRouter Lead – A small electrode is placed near the affected nerve in a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
  • External Pulse Generator – The patient wears an external device that sends electrical signals to the implant.
  • Neuromodulation of Nerve Signals – The pulses block pain signals from reaching the brain, reducing discomfort.
  • Personalized Pain Management – Patients can adjust stimulation levels using a handheld remote for customized relief.

Benefits of StimRouter Therapy

  • Minimally invasive – A simple outpatient procedure with minimal recovery time.
  • Targeted pain relief – Directly addresses the nerves responsible for pain.
  • Non-drug alternative – Reduces reliance on pain medications, including opioids.
  • Customizable treatment – Patients control the level of stimulation for optimal comfort.
  • Long-term solution – Provides lasting relief with a one-time implantation procedure.

What to Expect After Treatment

The StimRouter device is implanted in a 30- to 60-minute outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. Patients typically experience pain relief within a few weeks as the device is activated and adjusted to their specific needs. Some mild soreness at the implantation site may occur but usually resolves quickly.

Who Is a Good Candidate for StimRouter Therapy?

This therapy is recommended for patients who:

  • Suffer from chronic foot or ankle pain due to nerve damage.
  • Have tried medications, physical therapy, or injections without lasting relief.
  • Want a minimally invasive alternative to traditional pain management.
  • Are looking for a long-term, non-opioid solution to chronic pain.
