Monte Schmalhaus, DPM, is a highly trained surgeon and board-certified podiatrist who provides advanced patient-focused foot and ankle care.

Dr. Schmalhaus was born in San Ramon, CA, and grew up in Colorado and Utah. He graduated with Honors from Utah Valley University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science. He was an Academic All-American and Captain of the Division I Wrestling team. His desire to help others achieve a healthy lifestyle led him to pursue post-graduate studies in Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Schmalhaus earned his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago. He graduated with Honors and was a member of the Pi Delta National Honor Society. He successfully accomplished an intensive surgical residency program at Kaiser San Francisco Bay Area Foot & Ankle. Serving as the Chief Resident, he received comprehensive training in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery guided by exceptionally qualified leaders in the field.

Dr. Schmalhaus specializes in many surgical procedures such as Total Ankle Replacement surgery, minimally invasive procedures, flat foot reconstruction, high arch reconstruction, ligament repair, and Charcot reconstruction. He also has extensive experience in injuries, including foot and ankle fractures, Achilles tendon injuries, and cartilage injuries. Dr. Schmalhaus also specializes in ankle arthroscopy, arthritis care, bunions, hammertoes, diabetic limb salvage, sports medicine, heel pain, tendon ruptures, and wound and infection care.

Dr. Schmalhaus’ goal is to make patient-specific, research-based treatment plans. While possessing advanced expertise in surgical treatments, he advocates for comprehensive patient care and emphasizes the importance of providing conservative care when deemed appropriate.

Dr. Schmalhaus prioritizes evidence-based treatment and is published in Clinics of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. He has presented case studies at national conferences, authored research articles, is actively involved in cutting-edge research projects, and is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, hiking, playing golf, snowboarding, and trying new restaurants.
