What is Hallux Rigidus?

Hallux Rigidus, or big toe arthritis, happens when the cartilage in the metatarsophalangeal joint (aka the big toe joint) wears away, leading to pain and limited range of motion. It’s the most common place for arthritis in the foot, and although it typically occurs in people from 30-60 years old, it can happen in people as young as 18.

What Causes Hallux Rigidus?

There are many causes of Hallux Rigidus, including trauma to the toe, a genetic predisposition, and just plain bad luck. Fortunately, there are many treatment options!

Do I have Hallux Rigidus?

If you have pain in at the base of your big toe, pain with motion of your big toe, a bump on your big toe, or redness and swelling of your big toe, you may have arthritis in the joint.
