A contracture, which is a tightening of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, or skin, prevents normal movement of the associated body part. Contractures can lead to stiffness in the connective tissues of the body. Contractures and stiffness may be a result of improper or prolonged splintage, burns, crush or avulsion injuries, following replantation. Often, multiple structures are involved including the soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, joints and bones.
